The sun was shining bright in Albuquerque, New Mexico, as a bustling crowd gathered at Rio Grande High School for the 13th Annual Job Fair. State Sen. Michael Padilla’s event drew in around 80 businesses and nearly 3,500 people in search of a job opportunity.
- Recent high school graduates
- Individuals looking for entry-level positions
- Professionals seeking advancement or a career change
- Retirees looking for a new challenge
The job fair offers a unique platform for people of all ages and backgrounds to connect with multiple employers at one time, in one place. This allows individuals to showcase their skills, learn about job opportunities, and network with potential employers. Padilla, who has been hosting this event for 13 years, emphasized the importance of community connections. “There’s something here for everybody, whatever skill set you might have, entry level all the way through to, you know, attorneys, folks are recruiting for doctors, all sorts of things. Everything in the middle, teachers, airline pilots, you name it,” he said.
Since its inception, the job fair has helped over 10,200 people secure employment. While the primary goal is to support individuals seeking employment, the businesses that participate in the fair also benefit significantly. “I’ll be at the grocery store, the Little League, the church, the whatever, and people walk up to me, give me a hug. ‘Hey, I’ve still been at Delta Air Lines for 10 years.’ Or, ‘I’m still at the school district for this or whatever.’ Or, ‘Hey, I got a job with that construction company.’ It just makes my heart so happy,” said Padilla. He attributes this success to the connections made through the job fair, which have led to long-term relationships and job placements.
“Last year, we hired at least five to 10 people out of from the job fair, and we’ve recruited numerous families from the job fair. So that’s why we like to come out here,” said Ginger Moya with YDI.
Ginger Moya, with YDI, a non-profit organization providing employment services, emphasized the significance of the job fair for businesses. “We like to come out here because it’s a great opportunity to meet potential employees, learn about their skills, and find the right fit for our organization,” she said. For Brain Ollock, president of Bixby Electric, the job fair was a valuable experience. “We’re looking for laborers, operators, concrete people. We have some office openings for a manager. So we just felt it’s a great place to get down here to try and find some of those folks,” said Ollock. “We’ve gotten a ton of great resumes.”
The event also serves as a platform for businesses to showcase their brand and job openings. This, in turn, benefits the community by providing job opportunities and fostering economic growth. Key Takeaways:
